IISER Bhopal

The unprecedented rise of Greenhouse gas (GHG) levels in the atmosphere is the main driving force of climate change. In support of the Paris Agreement and to combat climate change, we focus on improving estimates of GHG at regional levels to predict future climate variability. In addition to regional GHG estimates and associated climate interactions, we are interested in integrating the data-model fusion techniques to downstream research applications in order to address issues like long-range transboundary air pollution by trace gases. We actively develop techniques to extract information from satellite imagery for accelerating sustainable agricultural innovations which aim at reducing anthropogenic emission and air pollution.

The atmospheric Greenhouse gas Modelling and Applications (GMA) group is established to facilitate the above-mentioned research-oriented activities. Our research tasks involve developing atmospheric numerical models and apply different observational (in situ and remote sensing) and atmospheric modelling approaches to improve the understanding of climate change. We employ an inverse modelling approach using an ensemble of atmospheric observations to infer the source and sinks of GHGs. We also work with remote-sensed vegetation indices to develop innovative modelling approaches to predict sustainability outcomes for agriculture and the environment. Our group is also a Max Planck Partner Group since August 2017. The inducted researchers work closely with national and international teams to bring in significant advancement in terms of developing an integrated greenhouse gas monitoring system over India.
